A bit about Europcar
Europe’s leading car rental company, Europcar, was launched in Paris. Founded in 1949, Europcar now operates worldwide. It owns a fleet of over 200,000 vehicles, offering both short and medium term rentals. The company is proud to provide a range of vehicles – from low-cost rentals to high-end hires. Europcar serves around 6 million customers a year, and is a multiple World Travel Award winner. In 2017, Europcar acquired the German company, Buchbinder, who specialise in van and truck rentals.
Europcar age requirements
How old do you have to be to rent a car from Europcar?
In the UK, Europcar’s age restrictions vary slightly depending on the location you hire from. Generally, you must be a minimum of 22 years old and if you are under 26, you need to have held your licence for two years.
Drivers between the ages of 22-26 are required pay a young driver surcharge of £33 per day. This is included in the price online, but only payable at the desk.
Young drivers are not permitted to rent premium or large vehicles.
Although young drivers aged 18-25 are permitted to rent a vehicle through Europcar in France, they must pay a steep fee to do so.
A young driver surcharge of €37 per day, up to a maximum of €370 per rental, must be paid in addition to the daily rental price for those 25 and under.
In Italy, drivers as young as 18 may rent with Europcar as long as they have held their licence for a minimum of one year.
A charge of €20,74 per day, up to a maximum of 15 days, must be paid if you are between the ages of 18-24. Those 25 and over do not have to pay this young driver fee.

What documents does Europcar require?
When collecting your vehicle, you will need to bring a few mandatory documents with you. These are the necessary items Europcar will need if you are picking up your car hire in the UK.
For UK licence holders:
- Driver’s licence (held for a minimum of of 12 months)
- DVLA Check Code
- If you still have an old paper licence, you must also bring an extra piece of photo ID
For non UK licence holders:
- Licence valid in the UK
- International Driving Permit (required depending on your licence)
- Passport
- Proof of entry into/exit the UK
