Travel Tips

Free culture
Many of Melbourne’s museums and galleries are free, such as the renowned National Gallery of Victoria. Take advantage of the city’s cultural gems on a rainy afternoon!

Store hours aren’t very long, often closing particularly early Monday to Wednesday and on the weekends. It’s better to go shopping in the morning in order track down that item you left at home.

It’s not a custom to tip in Australia and not expected. If you want to show your thanks for good service, 10% of the bill is fine.

There are free WiFi spots in across areas of the city, this includes Federation Square and State Library of Victoria.

When to visit
March to May and September to October are ideal for comfortable weather and fewer tourists. During the summer – December to February – the city is busy and sweaty.

Tips for driving in Melbourne

Melbourne has the highest number of trams in Australia. Do not overtake a stopped tram and remember that they always have right of way.

Hook Turns
This is a rule to be aware of in the Central Business District and will be indicated by overhead signs. Approach the intersection and move to the far left side, wait until the traffic lights turn green, then turn right.

Central parking in Melbourne is usually metered, so keep some coins handy. Time restrictions are common during the day but often end after 8:30pm.

Speed Limit
Unless otherwise stated, the speed limit within Melbourne is 50km/h.

A wild escape

Great Ocean Road

Well-loved by Australians and internationally awed over, the Great Ocean Road is one of the world’s best coastal drives. It’s a wild ride, that showcases the pure wonder of the continent down under.

The official start of the 240km road trip is in Torquay, around 65km from Melbourne, and hugs the coast to Allansford. Along the way, you can explore a network of national parks, bursting with wildlife and waterfalls, or launch off the shore and go whale watching. As one would expect, you’ll also find some of the best surfing beaches Australia has to offer. For something more surprising, drive to any of the volcanic plains or craters on the route.

But by far the most photographed site on the Great Ocean Road is the famous 12 Apostles. The size of these limestone rocks, which rise 45 metres up above the ocean, can only be grasped as you stand on the shore, breathing in the salty sea air.

The ultimate Melbourne road trip

  • Melbourne Airport MEL

Melbourne Airport is the second busiest in Australia.

  • Car hire pick up point

Most car hire desks are located on the ground floor of the terminals, some will send a shuttle.

  • Mornington Peninsula

With wineries, hot springs and golf, there are some fine ways to relax here.

  • Phillip Island

The big attraction on this island? Tiny penguins who waddle up from the ocean to the shore each evening.

  • Wilsons Promontory National Park

The most southern point of Australia, you’ll find scenic bushwalks and refreshing beaches.

  • Gippsland Lakes

The perfect place to cast your fishing line or paddle out and meander around the area’s small islands.
