A land of legendary landscapes, Iceland is a boundless supernatural vista.
Its remote expanses look like nothing else on earth; here, the power of nature isn’t shy. With everlasting days, magical northern lights and volcanoes that rumble below the surface, Iceland is a nature lover’s dream and prime road trip destination. And despite the cold weather, Iceland’s small population will warmly point you in the right direction.
Fuel in Iceland is expensive and you can drive long stretches without encountering a station. Fill up when you can and take note of which stations offer the cheapest prices.
These woolly animals outnumber Iceland’s human population by 2:1, so unsurprisingly, you’ll find these guys wandering out onto the roads.
Iceland is windy, and it is common for strong unexpected gusts to damage car doors. Park against the wind when possible, as to prevent the doors from flying open as you enter and exit the car.
Not all of Iceland’s roads are paved – including the main ring road – and it can be miles before you pass anyone else on the road. With this in mind, you’ll want to double check the rental company has supplied you with a repair kit and spare.
Driving off-road is illegal. Simply never do it.

However, if you plan on driving in the highlands on F-roads – rough unpaved mountain roads – a 4x4 is required.
