From Friday sunset to Saturday sunset each week, Israeli cities observe the Jewish Shabbat. This is practiced in different degrees throughout the country – in Tel Aviv there will cars on the road and some shops will be open, while in Jerusalem no work will be done and everything will be closed.

Israel is fairly relaxed towards western-dress. However, if you are visiting religious sites you must dress conservatively. Women are to cover their legs and upper arms when entering both mosques and synagogues and men are to wear a kippah (hemispherical shaped cap) to synagogues.

Foodie delights

Some might state the falafel as the heart of Israeli cuisine. You’ll find these little deep-fried balls of fava beans and chickpeas being sold at high end restaurants as well as street food stalls.

Alongside falafel, this thick dip of smashed chickpeas has spread across the Middle East and the West. You’ll find a number of different varieties of hummus in Israel, commonly served as a starter or side dish.

A traditional Mizrahi Jewish sandwich, which has become an iconic Israeli street food. Made of aubergine, onion, boiled eggs and tahini, everyone has their own opinion on the best place to get it.

Start your morning off with this traditional Israeli breakfast. Eggs are cracked into a mix of tomatoes and peppers, and served up smoking hot.
