Resting on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River, the city was once home to two of America’s greatest inventors – Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Though Fort Myers is quieter and more laid-back than its eastern counterparts, it's still surrounded by great beaches and a holiday atmosphere.

The Thomas Edison and Henry Ford Winter Estates are filled with fascinating artefacts and exhibits on the two men, who both had holiday homes next to each other here in the early 20th century.

There’s plenty to discover in the surrounding area from wonderful natural sights to museums. A few miles south of the town is the peaceful Lover’s Key State Park. Made up of several small islets, here an old tram trundles through a thriving mangrove forest and delivers you at one of the finest beaches in Florida. The area is teeming with life, with everything from turtles to bald eagles. It’s also a popular area for angling, swimming or simply relaxing by the seashore.
