The city is a great stop off which has something for everybody on a Scandinavian driving holiday.

Copenhagen driving tips

As with any capital city, Copenhagen has its issues with traffic congestion, but it can also be a fantastic city to drive around. Here’s what you need to know about driving in Copenhagen:

Traffic in and around Copenhagen reached such levels that in 2011 there were serious talks about introducing toll roads, but as of yet, these have been abandoned and there are no signs they will be brought in any time soon.

The most notable road in the area is the E20, which runs to the south of Copenhagen and also goes across the Øresund Bridge to Malmo in Sweden. The O2 ring road runs around the centre of Copenhagen, including along the coastline, and is a road you’ll get very used to whilst driving around the city.

There are three parking zones within the city, with the prices getting increasingly expensive the closer you get to the actual centre.

Money saving tips

Avoid the tourist traps
When it comes to eating out in Copenhagen, there are many fine dining establishments (including one of the world’s best restaurants – Noma) but you can find some wonderful local food if you shop around and explore the less tourist-focused areas.

Enjoy Copenhagen’s free attractions
There’s so much you can do for free even in Copenhagen. See the tranquil side of the city at the Botanical Garden, or soak in panoramic views of the city in the Christiansborg Palace Tower. If you fancy a dip, Islands Brygge Harbour Bath is the place to go for open air swimming.

Get the CPH Card
This card offers discounts on many of the top attractions in Copenhagen, including museums and the likes of the Tivoli Gardens theme park. It also offers free travel on buses and metro trams, potentially saving you a fortune.

Beyond Copenhagen

Explore Scandinavia

It takes less than an hour to drive from Copenhagen to Malmo in Sweden, thanks to the Øresund Bridge, which opened in 2000. As well as the excitement of driving along the world’s longest combined road and rail bridge into another country, this trip allows you to enjoy the sights and attractions of another fascinating city.

Malmo has famous historical squares and neo-futuristic architecture like the Turning Torso, the tallest building in Scandinavia, along with lots of parks to explore. The Malmö Museer has three museums for the price of one, including an aquarium and nocturnal hall, full of bats and electric eels.
