Sights to see
Darlington lives up to its status as a market town. There are covered stalls in a superb old Victorian building, outdoor facilities in Market Square and the boisterous livestock market on the third Friday of each month. The town even hosts an array of speciality markets throughout the year, selling everything from continental cheeses to designer clothing. Away from the street stalls you'll find lots of bars, restaurants and shops to keep you entertained. The centre is covered with flower boxes and hanging baskets, all draped across quaint old architecture. It's a wonderful place to wander around. For a little culture, head to the Edwardian Civic Theatre and Arts Centre which has a year-round programme of plays, films, exhibitions and special events.
