The best areas in town
Christchurch
Christchurch Park is a green open space in which to walk and socialize. It's also home to the grand Tudor building Christchurch Mansion. Here you can take in over 500 years of history and artworks by Gainsborough and Constable. The Christchurch area is also where you'll find Ipswich Museum.
Waterfront
Probably the most recognisable part of Ipswich, the port area is known as the Waterfront. It's full of buzzing cafes, restaurants and bars – and you can take to the waters on an Orwell River cruise. The University of Suffolk and DanceEast are also based here.
The Saints
Full of historic buildings, The Saints is one of the main shopping areas in Ipswich. There are plenty of quirky and independent retailers, as well as landmarks related to the famous son of Ipswich, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey.
Portman Road
Home to Ipswich Town FC, Portman Road Stadium is also a popular venue for concerts and music events. Go behind the scenes of professional football with a stadium tour to make the most of your visit.
Ipswich driving tips
- Norwich Road is one of Ipswich's busiest routes for traffic in and out of the town. The many side roads along the main stretch can confuse drivers new to the area, so it's a good idea to take extra care.
- Ipswich is connected to several cities by major roads. Head out on the A12 to London, the A14 to Cambridge and the A140 to Norwich.
- Be prepared to park up before spending a day out in the town, as much of the town centre has been pedestrianised in recent years.
- The Orwell Bridge carries the A14 over the River Orwell just south of Ipswich. It can be closed on occasion – such as during times of high winds for safety reasons. Watch out for diverted traffic causing congestion on roads closer to town.
Back in time
Living history at Kentwell Hall
Just under an hour's drive from Ipswich is Kentwell Hall in the village of Long Melford. Not just a museum telling the story of domestic Tudor history, the hall and gardens recreate life in this time with costumed actors during re-enactment events.
Stroll around the moated mansion and you'll feel as if you have actually gone back in time. The re-enactors will speak to you about their lives in the 16th century and you're able to watch them working, crafting and socialising.
The gardens host all sorts of re-enactment events throughout the year – but are still beautiful to wander around at quieter times. Highlights include the Walled Garden and the Moats – with the rare breed farm being great for the kids. The farm has pigs, chickens and goats – and even the odd peacock to spot!
The best time to visit is during the summer as more events are held when the weather is fine and the kids are on summer holidays.
